Bicycle Ambulance

A truly lifesaving gift.

Many rural communities are miles from the nearest hospital. This means pregnant women need to walk for hours while in labour or seriously ill children have to be carried in their parents' arms. This gift can change that and benefit the whole community. A bicycle ambulance has a shaded stretcher on wheels, in which anyone in need can be transported to a hospital in double-quick time.

Vincent Vundu is the treasurer of his village in Nkhotakota, Malawi, and has seen the incredible change that has happened since Concern delivered a bicycle ambulance to his community a year ago. Before they received this gift, people had to walk for over an hour and a half to get to the hospital. This often had life-threatening implications. Now, thanks to this gift, if someone is in need of urgent care a family member can help them onto the stretcher, and cycle them to the hospital in less than 30 minutes. When asked if there are any problems with the bicycle ambulance, Vincent said that he only wishes there were more of them as they are making such a huge difference in Malawi!

This gift goes towards our Health programme.
