Potatoes may have been the first vegetable grown in space but in remote parts of Ethiopia, the effects of this staple food are truly out of this world!
The humble spud grown in Ireland, has been introduced by Concern to South Wollo, Ethiopia to diversify livelihood options for farmers in highland areas. This incredibly versatile crop is now being grown by 5,000 families! This crop is great for nutrition as well as income generation, household consumption, and seed purposes. With high productivity on a small amount of land, these very aPEELing vegetables are truly improving the lives of many.
Gift in action
We all know the power of the humble spud – and in Ethiopia they’re working wonders, thanks to our life-changing potato programme! Potatoes are a great source of nutrition, income and seeds – and it takes very little land to produce a decent crop for a family. Dad of four, Ahimed Ali Mahamed only had barley to grow which limited his income as well as his family’s diet. Now thanks to Concern he grows potatoes, as well as apples and earns enough to send his children to school.
This gift goes towards our Livelihoods programme.
